Opinions On The Use Of Nicknames For Sports Teams?

I dislike the Cleveland Indians and the Washington Redskins. The Fla. State Seminoles I'm ok with because the Seminoles originated in Florida and made their home there until Andrew Jackson kicked them out towards Oklahoma. Atlanta Braves? I didn't ever realize that was a Native American name... I don't think it's as bad as the Indians or the Redskins... like, the Native Americans were called Indians because Columbus though he had reached the Indies, not another continent. That's why they hate that name- because it's just plain WRONG! lol. I agree entirely with you actually, and this is a great question. I always try to say Native American even though I'm Irish, Italian, Scottish, Dutch, and French- completely European. But I realize that we should respect them. If Powhatan and Squanto did not teach the settlers of Jamestown and Boston (Sox, Pats, Celts Represent! lol) then those settlers would never have been able to survive. Even though my ancestors weren't here back in the 1830's when Jackson booted the Indians and took their land, I still feel really guilty for it.
