Can you spread Shingles later on in life?

My roomate just got shingles, and believes he may have gotten it from me. However, I haven't had shingles since the third grade, and I don't think it's possible to spread shingles like I carry the risk for it in my DNA or something. I've tried searching the internet, but I can't seem to get a clear answer.
