Does diesel fuel burn in it's liquid state, or does it have to be sprayed to ignite?

I've heard that diesel won't ignite as a regular liquid like gasoline does. I've heard it must be sprayed either into a fire or a high pressure chamber like in a diesel engine, but I'm skeptical. any thoughts?
