PROBLEMS IN NEIGHBORHOOD?

We live in Chicago, we moved here from a small town in the midwest. Our neighbors who are almost all Irish, some of them are even from Ireland do not like us. My friend who lives across the street says they think we are backwards. It is also bad for my oldest son. He asked a girl down the street out and she said no, here parents only let her date guys that are "white and catholic" (we are white and Christian, but I find this unacceptable) and one of the kids in the neighborhood beat him up for listening to rap music and even called him a "N-word lover". We have never seen anything like this, I thought big cities were more tolerant and diverse. All the neighbors are cops, fireman, city workers and small business owners. Its not like we are in a rich neighborhood or a slum, but these people are very closed. They dont talk to my husband and they barely talk to me. Ive tried inviting people over and to do stuff and only my friend across the street will and our husbands dont like each other. My husband thinks he's a snob and he says that my husband is just not his type of person. I am going nuts because I am lonely and feel we are doing something wrong. i would sell and move, but we cant afford it. What do i need to do to fit in
