What kind of wine should I serve with Spaghetti and Meat?

I am making a Spaghetti dinner for me and my boyfriend for Valentine's Day. So I need to know several different kinds of wine that would go well with the spaghetti and meat. Nothing too expensive, but something that is nice. I have heard Merlot is good. I just need some help! Thank you!
